Attachments

From September 2010, all new Roto MCSS models will be pre-arranged for use with a fully-integrated access platform attachment and with a winch for lifting.

When fitted with a Merlo (Tre Emme) work platform, the parameters of the Roto are automatically changed to that of a MEWP. In this configuration, the Roto complies fully with the European MEWP Standard EN280. In other words, it can be used, completely legally, exactly as a MEWP.

Rotos can also be supplied with Tre Emme lifting equipment for lifting duties.

Load-sensing Hydraulics

All Roto models use a Load-sensing hydraulic system. A variable delivery axial piston pump automatically adjusts flow rate, according to the load demanded. The standard build IMS Roto uses a single lever joystick providing direct connection to the lift and tilt services, with proportional electrical control of the slew, extension and standard attachment service via roller switches.

Roto MCSS

The MCSS is the ultimate development of the Roto concept, originally introduced by Merlo in 1991. The MCSS digital control system, developed and produced in-house by Merlo, provides a highly sophisticated safety and monitoring system, designed to make the absolute most out of the lifting capabilities of the Roto, in complete safety.

The MCSS is very much a true multi-role vehicle. It does the jobs of forklift, lifting equipment and work platforms on site.

The Roto MCSS is the most sophisticated Roto configuration, with sliding, vertical outriggers and a slewing system with continuous rotation. Cab instruments are completely digital.

Lift height

The four original MCSS models are based upon the same chassis, 145HP Deutz turbo engine and hydrostatic transmission. All models have hydropneumatic suspension and a 40 kph maximum travel speed.

Four and five-section boom assemblies are used, keeping the travel length overall to a minimum, by comparison with competitive machines.

Lift heights up to 26m.

Stabilisers

The four stabilisers are hydraulically actuated in pairs. Both the sideways extension and vertical displacement of the outriggers are independently controlled. A unique feature of the MCSS system is that the overload and stability monitoring system is completely independent of the stabiliser position.

This means that the Roto MCSS continues to work safely, even with stabilisers partially or asymmetrically extended. eg operating against a wall or in narrow roadways.

From April 2012, all MCSS machine feature a single-button auto levelling system, making the job even easier!

Continuous slew system

A unique centre joint, designed and built in-house, transfers electrical power, digital command signals, hydraulic fluid and even cab heating water from the undercarriage up into the turret. The turret is continuously slewing, so there are no mechanical locks (except a road transport locking pin).

Lift Height

Three, four and even five-section boom assemblies provide lift heights from 10-26m. Chain drive mechanisms reduce parasitic weight of the boom sections and contribute to the excellent working load capacities, even at full reach.

MCSS System

The Merlin Continuous Slew Safety System (MCSS) is the secret behind the performance of the Roto MCSS. Instead of a modified 'off the shelf' crane system, Merlo have developed a uniquely capable system in-house.

Each of the four outrigger legs contains a pressure transducer, which is constantly interrogated by the central processor unit (CPU). The CPU works out the stability of the Roto from those pressure measurements. It does not rely upon a preset load chart or preset attachments, like the other systems. For this reason, it does not need the outriggers to be completely extended, greatly extending the versatility of the Roto in actual use.

The digital display screen gives all of the information requited by the driver, whether in forklift or lifting modes. The driver is also able to preset limits for slew angle and lifting height, enabling him to concentrate on the work area.
