There can be few farmers with more experience of Merlo telehandlers than Maurice and Fraser Jones, who farm Calcourt Farms, near Montgomery in Powys. Since 1994, they have purchased thirty Merlos from their local dealer (currently R V W Pugh Ltd of Churchstoke).
The six-unit farm group currently runs five machines – three 6m lift 'Compact' models and two, slightly larger 7m Turbofarmers. One of the latter is more or less permanently engaged in feed mixing operations at the main business unit, and has put in an impressive 3,000 hours of work in just 15 months!
The 2500 acre business is spread within a seven mile triangle, with a Merlo at each of the four main production units, plus the fed mixing machine. The business includes some 1,000 pedigree milk cows, which are all fed using a Total Mixed Ration rolled and blended in-house. The farm has some 500 acres set to cereals (wheat/barley) and 200 acres of maize, plus bought-in protein content.
