ROTO 45.21 EVS of Greenwood Plant, at work on the Scarborough harbour wall restoiration project.

Civil Engineering contractors, Edmund Nuttall Ltd., have found yet another novel use for a Merlo ROTO slewing handler.

In renewing and repairing the harbour wall at Scarborough (as part of a major sea wall contract with Scarborough Borough Council), they needed to be able to reach over the sea wall and down to low water level. Scaffolding was not practical in the tidal zone; hence a more flexible approach was required.

Enter Scarborough-based Plant Hirer, Ed Greenwood, who supplied a continuous-slew ROTO 45.21 EVS, fitted with a SPACE aerial platform system.

“The novel thing about the SPACE” says Plant Manager John Green “Is that it has its own telescopic extension and slewing facility. It can be used to extend the working height of the ROTO, or attached to give up to 7.4m of under-reach for bridge or wall maintenance. And, it is very safe, being approved to international access platform standards, just like any other MEWPS”

Nuttall’s masonry subcontractors are currently repairing the outer and inner walls, in preparation for replacing the parapet. The stone for this will be coming from a newly reopened quarry at Aislaby, which supplied the original Victorian harbour project.
