All Merlo handlers use a similar hydrostatic layout.

The diesel engine drives a high quality variable flow pump, controlled by an electronic management system which ensures the engine always drives at peak efficiency.Pipes connect the pump to a hydrostatic motor, which may be of fixed or variable output, depending on the model.  In turn, this motor drives a two-speed gearbox permitting the driver to select a work or travel speed range.

As no mechanical drive is used up to this point, the engine can be low for access and stability, but the gearbox high, to permit extraordinary ground clearance!

The dropbox drives two Merlo built axles (with only a few exceptions) through prop shafts.

The oil part of the  hydrostatic system is completely self-contained, with only a small volume of oil. This protects the system from dirt ingress and ensures both rapid warmup on cold days, with most efficient cooling (through a radiator heat exchanger) when hot. Electronic system management prevents any overloading of the hydrostatic system, giving smooth continuous speed control.
