That’s Nick Merrick's opinion of his third Merlo (a 6m lift P26.6 SPT with boom suspension), newly arrived from Vincent Tractors of Fraddon.  The 400 acre Home Farm estate is part of the Boscawen Farm Partnership in Tregothnan, near Truro, and Nick has been the Farm Manager for the last nine years. "We've been pleased with all our Merlos - they're dependable and easy to drive" says Nick, "And the boom suspension lets us travel quickly without spillage". Great support from a 'family' dealer was one of Nick's main reasons for continuing with Merlo, apart from all the machine features, such as its unequalled visibility.

The B.S.S (Boom Suspension System) is one of two optional suspension systems available on Merlo telehandlers. In this case, nitrogen accumulators are placed in the boom lift circuit, dampening out shock loads induced by surface irregularities. The basic Merlo long wheelbase and weight balance makes them very stable when travelling – but accelerometer testing shows a very useful drop in structural vibration with B.S.S. engaged. That means less load spillage and reduces the Whole Body Vibration level to which the driver is exposed.

The system is controlled from a dashboard-mounted switch and also cuts out when the boom is raised above a preset safety angle. A second, even more effective, Electronic Active Suspension (E.A.S) system is available on certain Merlo models.
